Oak & Granite

This front garden project transformed a modest lawn and scattered shrubs into a refined ornamental gravel garden rich in form, texture, and seasonal interest. Two circular raised beds—built from hand-laid granite blocks in collaboration with Smart Bricks—serve as sculptural focal points: one planted with swaying ornamental grasses, the other with a trio of low-growing Japanese maples. A curved oak sleeper wave introduces movement and structure, echoing natural rhythms.

A celestial-style patio of hexagonal pavers links the driveway to the front door, while a charcoal gravel path edged in rusted CorTen steel guides the eye—and the visitor—from the front door to the back garden. The contrast between the deep charcoal tones of the path and the Cotswold cream gravel offers a striking visual dialogue.

A CorTen-edged steel and wood chip bed was a late addition, designed to protect the large magnolia’s extensive near surface roots discovered during the build. This change allowed for planting without disturbing the tree, while adding another sculptural layer to the garden.

Thematic beds anchor the space: a pinetum and fern corner, bold mixed planting, and repeated textures lend coherence and depth. Though newly planted with young specimens, the design has been carefully composed to grow in elegance as the garden matures, offering year-round interest and harmony.
